Tigua is a community composed mainly of indigenous people. It is the cradle of indigenous artists, who through their handicrafts represent the life of the countryside and the customs of the communities; it is the living portrait of their world embedded in the picturesque valleys and paramos of the Andes. The paintings stand out for being made of tanned leather or sheepskin and painted with acrylics. The masks are made of wood and painted with bright colors that portray animals of the Andean and Amazonian cosmovision such as condors, hummingbirds, monkeys and bears. Also portrayed are popular characters of the festivities such as the Devil Huma, Danzante de Pujilí, clowns and skulls.
The Toachi River Canyon was formed by the emission of pyroclastic flows, lithic fragments, sand, bombs and pumice from the eruption of the Quilotoa volcano. The last eruption of Quilotoa occurred around 1280 and was one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the last
1000 years. However, geological excavations at the site suggest that the canyon is about
1800 years old, which means that it was formed by a previous eruption.
The parish of Zumbahua, is a town that must be crossed to reach the Quilotoa Lagoon. This parish is located between 3300 and 4000 meters above sea level. The majority of the population is indigenous. Currently, in order not to lose the cultural richness and the language, the schools teach the children in Spanish and Quichua.
The Quilotoa volcanic lagoon located at 3,900 meters above sea level. This is one of the most beautiful and spectacular sites in Ecuador, which stands out for its natural environment that transmits tranquility, and for its green and turquoise waters located inside an extinct volcanic crater. It is possible to descend to the shore of the lagoon to admire its waters from up close, this is a perfect place to relax and enjoy the tranquility of nature. Inside the lagoon it is possible to take a kayak ride (additional cost). This activity and the natural reserve is managed by the indigenous communities. The ascent from the lagoon is an excellent exercise, but physically demanding; alternatively the community provides mules for travelers who require assistance to rent this service.
