The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Cuenca, also known as the New Cathedral of Cuenca, is the city's most representative religious symbol. Built in Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance styles with three domes rising above the roof, it was inspired by St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Construction began in 1885 and was completed 90 years later, in 1975. It can hold around 8,000 people and attracts hundreds of Catholic devotees every day.
This building is of great importance to Cuenca within the urban context of the city, not only because of its location on one of the corners of Calderón Park, but also because of its main function as a center of education and culture, as it is the former building of the University of Cuenca, which operated in this building until the 1960s, after which the building was occupied by the Superior Court of Justice. Currently, this building houses the offices of the Provincial Court of Justice.
The Barranco de Cuenca is the natural corridor of the Tomebamba River, which borders the southern part of the city's historic center, characterized by its important landscape, architectural, historical, and cultural qualities.
