Whether you decide to fly or drive over the Andes and into the Amazon basin, you will arrive at Lago Agrio or the Cuyabeno Bridge, where Cuyabeno Lodge services will begin. There are several options for getting there, explained at the end of the itinerary.
If you arrive in Lago Agrio, shared transportation will pick you up at approximately 9:00 a.m. at the Hotel D’mario. Transportation will take you to the “Cuyabeno Bridge” (distance 100 km) where you will meet your guide and have lunch at a local restaurant. If you take a private bus, you will arrive directly at the Cuyabeno Bridge. You will then be taken by motorized canoe along the Cuyabeno River the rest of the way to Laguna Grande, where Cuyabeno Lodge is located. During this approximately 2-hour river trip, you will be able to observe the rich wildlife.
Please note that depending on rainfall, river water levels may rise and fall. During drier seasons, it is possible that the canoe may not reach the lodge directly. However, Cuyabeno staff and canoe operators from the Siona Community will assist you with your belongings for the rest of the way if walking is necessary. The walk would be an easy 15 to 20 minutes.
After settling into your room at Cuyabeno Lodge, you and your guide will take a tour of the lagoon to observe animals, swim, or enjoy the sunset on a canoe excursion.
After breakfast, you will walk through the "dryland forest" with your bilingual naturalist guide, who will explain the wildlife, medicinal plants, forest ecosystem, and indigenous life. When you return, you will have time to rest and relax before lunch. Later, you will take a canoe trip to flooded forest areas with Macrolobium trees covered in abundant epiphytes to spot monkeys and birds. After dinner, there will be a night walk in the primary forest to look for insects and observe the nocturnal flora and fauna.
After waking up and having breakfast, you will follow the Cuyabeno River downstream on a canoe trip to reach the Siona indigenous village. You will observe and participate in an activity in which you will cook what is called the typical "casabe." Your guide will give you explanations and insights into their way of life. You will then return to the lodge for lunch, with time in the afternoon for a nap or a refreshing swim in Laguna Grande. After dinner, there will be another nighttime canoe excursion to try to spot caimans, snakes, and nocturnal birds.
On your last day, if you wish, before breakfast you can enjoy a paddle boat ride to experience the pristine calm of the lagoon and listen to the exotic sounds of Amazonian wildlife as it awakens. Upon your return, we will enjoy breakfast and then prepare to return to the Cuyabeno Bridge, or continue on to Lago Agrio.
