Departing from Quito, a 30-minute flight to Coca over the eastern Andes mountain range. After landing, approximately mid-morning, a 5-minute transfer will take you to the port of "La Misión," where you will board a comfortable motorized boat. Here we begin a canoe trip along the Napo River for approximately 2 hours, with a box lunch and coffee provided en route. Along the way, you can observe birds such as herons, kingfishers, and others. After arriving at the NWC entrance dock, we will disembark to use the restroom, then take a majestic and peaceful 2-hour paddle canoe ride surrounded by trees, paddling along a narrow stream that connects to the lake where the lodge is located. There is a good chance of spotting some species of monkeys, as well as large birds such as toucans, parrots, or even macaws. Arrival in the afternoon at the Napo Wildlife Center with a breathtaking view of Lake Añangu, a welcome drink followed by a briefing from the local manager.
Early in the morning, guests will visit Ecuador's most accessible parrot clay lick, approximately 1 hour from the lodge. They will arrive just in time to witness the parrots' activity at the clay lick, which occurs from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. During this spectacle, they will be able to observe a total of 11 species of parrots, parakeets, and macaws.
Later, you will walk along the forest trail to visit the Kichwa community of Añangu and spend time with a family and their daily activities. Afterwards, you will return to the stream and walk through a terra firme forest for about 30 minutes until you reach the second parrot feeding ground, where the weather conditions will help you spot different species of parrots, parakeets, and even macaws.
Lunch will be served at the Napo Cultural Center, where you can interact with the Kichwa community. Finally, you will return to the lodge, arriving in the late afternoon to enjoy a delicious dinner.
After an early breakfast, we left the lodge to experience an incredible view of the rainforest from a 36-meter-high canopy tower, an excellent way to observe life above the forest floor.
This is the second tower at Napo Wildlife Center, located about 30 minutes from the lodge deep in the terra firme forest. As you ascend the 12-story tower, you pass through different levels of the forest and emerge above a huge Ceiba tree. Flocks of colorful birds pass through the tree canopy, blue and yellow macaws fly overhead, spider monkeys search for fruit in nearby trees, two species of large toucans call out early in the mornings and evenings, and the life of the forest canopy opens up before you. Birds that are virtually impossible to see from the forest floor far below are suddenly at your side, oblivious to your presence. The Canopy Tower opens up a whole new world for guests at the Napo Wildlife Center.
Afterwards, we will enjoy lunch served at the lodge. In the afternoon, we will visit a trail and explore the primary forest to discover the interior of the forest, with the possibility of encountering lizards, colorful manakins, or the unique and endemic golden-mantled tamarin monkeys. After the hike, we will explore the lake and streams by canoe, with a good chance of encountering a family of giant otters along the way.
Early departure and final canoe trip back to the Napo River, where the stream may reveal new sights of giant otters, Saki monkeys, or other rare birds. Then, transfer to the motorized canoe to return to Coca, where you will arrive after approximately a 2-hour boat trip. There you can check in for the Coca–Quito flight; the schedule will be announced according to departure details and arrangements.
